SWOP visit to GWL – June 2018

On Wednesday 13th June SWOP visited the Glasgow Women’s Library. We received plenty of tea and cake – along with a very warm welcome – at this unique museum of women’s history.

“I had no idea that the Glasgow Women’s Library had so much to offer.  Apart from the traditional lending library there is also lots of interesting artefacts in the archive collection, too many to mention and definitely worth a trip out from Glasgow City Centre for a visit.  Thanks for a great afternoon” –  Morag Higgison,  Scottish Government Library

SWOP Summer meeting hosted by GWL

Glasgow Women's LibraryOur next SWOP meeting will be on Wednesday 13th June at the Glasgow Women’s Library.

Glasgow Women’s Library (GWL) is a national treasure! It is the only accredited museum in the UK dedicated to women’s lives, histories and achievements, with a lending library, archive collections and innovative programmes of public events & learning opportunities. Highlights from GWL’s collections include Suffragette postcards and jewellery, feminist posters and badges, archives of organisations such as Scottish Women’s Aid and UK Family Planning Association and knitting and dress-making patterns.

It was a finalist in CILIP’s Libraries Change Lives Award in 2017, for its weekly read aloud group, Story Cafe.

GWL has recently been shortlisted for the prestigious Art Fund Museum of the Year 2018 – the only Scottish museum to make the shortlist this year, and the first nomination for a museum rooted in feminism.

Our visit will start with a tour of the collection followed by refreshments (and the meeting). You can book a place on this exciting visit via Eventbrite.

Please aim to arrive promptly so the tour can begin at 1.30 sharp.

#swop25th Anniversary AGM – a brief report

This afternoon SWOP held its 25th Anniversary AGM at Augustine United Church, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh. A gratifyingly large number of SWOP members, old and new, turned up to mark the occasion.

SWOP – originally the Scottish Working Group on Official Publications – held its first meeting in 1989. A few years later the first edition of the Directory of Official Publications in Scotland was published. I got a little geeky thrill when Fiona showed us a copy of that, since I spent a fair bit of last year building the current version of the Directory which lives on this site.

Once the official AGM business had been carried out, and the winner of the photo competition had been drawn, we had a couple of very interesting and informative presentations.

First Juliet Grimes from the Scottish Government gave us a very entertaining talk on Responsible Procurement. It’s good to know that Scotland is a world leader in the development of sustainable procurement via the “Marrakech Process” (aka the “Machrihanish Process” – though Juliet’s attempt at Scotification has so far failed to catch on).  Juliet also made an amusing comparison between the serialisation of Dickens’ Pickwick Papers and the tweets of Why my Cat is Sad.

Then Dr Amy Todman (National Library of Scotland) provided an overview of the challenges of collecting the diverse range of materials related to the Scottish Independence Referendum. I for one am relieved to learn that, due to the introduction of new parody legislation, NLS will be able to collect the marvellous videos of Lady Alba.

Once the AGM and presentations were over it was time for some networking …and a little bit of wine. The Business Committee laid on a huge and excellent selection of food. We had a good go at devouring it all but there was still plenty to take home in doggie bags. Speaking of which…

This was, without doubt, the best 25th Anniversary AGM I have ever attended. Very happy Birthday SWOP!

#swop25th photo competition – and the winner is…

…our very own convenor Fiona Laing!

“Fix!” you cry – but no.  Here is pictorial evidence of the prize draw itself:

Thanks to all those who entered the competition on here, on Twitter or via the KHub page. The pictures looked great. I’ll try to post as many of them on here as I can – though some SWOP members prefer the seclusion of the KHub.  I’ll see what can be done…

Anyway, congratulations Fiona!  We’re not jealous at all   🙂

For catering purposes please let me know if you are able to attend this meeting no later than close of play Friday 7th November including any dietary requirements.
