Coaching – Get expert help and assistance from fellow SWOP members.

SWOP is perfectly placed to help with all kinds of knowledge sharing on a huge range of subjects. I’ll bet that every single SWOP member can offer something different: whether that be advice on setting up an online blog using Word press, getting started on Twitter, setting up an online survey using Survey Monkey or how to use track changes in Microsoft Word!

An example of where Knowledge sharing was used to great effect was just recently when my colleague Edna Stirrat (Collections Officer) at the Scottish Parliament , asked if anyone could help set up a Word press account for a conference she was organising. ‘I know the very person’ I said. This person was fellow SWOP member Jane Condie. I would describe Jane as the ‘go to’ person for digital solutions that can add value to your library and Information Service, and this is because she is an expert at blogging and setting up online conferences and events. Jane has a friendly and helpful (not to mention incredibly patient) manner and is the ideal coach to facilitate your digital L&D. After Edna emailed Jane (using the SWOP contacts lists to find her details), they arranged a mutually convenient time where Edna could meet Jane and get a quick, one-to-one tutorial on Word press. Jane’s tutorial covered everything from setting up a site and editing it, to archiving and decommissioning out of date sites. Needless to say Edna came away from her coaching session armed with new skills and knowledge that enabled her to emulate what Jane taught her. Jane also made herself available at the end of the telephone, so Edna could ask for clarification if she needed to.

Library professionals are increasingly, having to display digital skills and this is because certain IT skills are more often than not devolved to the end-user.

Organising conferences online are just one example of where technology has facilitated new approaches to the ways in which you can send out your initial communication, conference updates and allow your attendee’s to book virtually.

So if you want to create the best online conference, ‘meet-up’ or other event SWOP can put you in touch with a whole raft of professionals willing to share their knowledge and expertise.
