Google Doodle: alessandro-voltas-270th-birthday

According to Google, today is Alessandro Volta’s 270th birthday – Happy Birthday Mr Volta! Some other events on this day in history:

  • 1564 – artist Michelanglelo died in Rome
  • 1841 – the first continuous filibuster in the U.S. Senate began, lasting until March 11th
  • 1885 – Mark Twain’s “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” was published
  • 1930 – the planet Pluto was discovered (also, ‘Elm Farm Ollie’ became the first cow to fly in a plane)
  • 1952 – Greece and Turkey became members of NATO
  • 1977 – The space shuttle Enterprise took its maiden “flight” on top of a Boeing 747
  • 1979 – Snow fell in the Sahara Desert

It also so happens that, 5 years ago today, the very first post was posted onto this site!

I’ve been looking for other momentous occurrences on that day but, to be honest, Thursday the 18th February 2010 was kind of dull. It looks like the Houses of Commons and Lords were both in recess. The Scottish Parliament was too but, according to the Minutes of Chamber Proceedings – 24 February Vol. 3, No 55 Session 3, the Scottish Law Commission somehow managed to lay their Annual Report 2009 (SG/2010/8) before Parliament on the 18th (it was not subject to any parliamentary procedure). Nicely done SLC!

In world news, Barack Obama met the Dalai Lama, which was nice and The Telegraph had this cute picture of a Canadian baby

A newborn baby is photographed covered by a cosy knitted hat and propping its tiny chin up on its delicate fingers. Stephanie Robin, from Ontario, Canada, takes pictures of tiny tots in adorable poses, just days after they are born

So, SWOP was pretty much the highlight of the day. I’m sure Google will Doodle us next year…
