Royal Commission for the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland

I was fortunate this week to be invited on a tour of the search rooms at RCAHMS. They have an absolutely fascinating collection of maps, plans, aerial photographs, photograph albums and manuscripts.
A proportion of their material is available via their website however there are experts on hand in their search room or by phone to help you find material for your research. There is no requirement for a reader’s ticket but it is advisable to phone in advance so that material can be fetched out for your visit.
I was particulary interested in the plans and drawings that they hold for buildings or structures that were never built. We were shown a proposal for the Scott Monument which was obviously rejected in favour of the current monument. They also hold the archives of Charles Brand the demolition contractor which would enable you to see properties before and during demolition.
RCAHMS and Historic Scotland are due to merge in Oct 2015.
